Pick up a gift card and choose local this Christmas

Minehead Gift Cards are now available to pick up in a range of businesses across Minehead. Customers can then add a balance to the gift card using a free service called Load This Card. Gift cards are also available to buy online, with gift message and delivery direct to the recipient.

One of the places which accepts the Minehead Gift Card, and where you can also pick up Minehead Gift Cards, is Woolly and Wild, a family run gift shop on The Avenue in Minehead. Owner Linda said:

“It’s ideal that people can now pick up the Minehead Gift Card when they’re doing their shopping, it’s more convenient, especially if they need a gift at the last minute and are not sure what to get. The Minehead Gift Card is a brilliant idea. People can choose what to spend it on, like a meal, getting their hair done or with a small business.

“We opened Woolly & Wild in Minehead in 2021, during the lockdown, relocating the business from Dunster and it has been a really good move. The shop offers gifts for everyone, from home décor and lighting to painted gin glasses, Lily Flame candles handmade in Somerset, and Christmas decorations. You put so much in as a small business owner, and it’s so nice when people take the time to shop locally, and return again. It means a great deal.

“When people have spent their gift cards at Woolly & Wild, they’ve had high value cards of £50 or £100, and have then spent money on top of that. Being a part of the gift card helps to bring in new customers. I urge all businesses owners in Minehead to get involved.”

Cards can be purchased from £5-£500 and spent with a variety of businesses in the town, on shopping, food and drink, accommodation, leisure and attractions and services.

Another business that is ready to accept the Minehead Gift Card is Blueberry, run by husband and wife team Angela and Martin Neal:

Martin Neal said: “Blueberry offers silver jewellery, diamond crystal art, bath products and scented candles, plus a Christmas range and stocking fillers. We moved from our bigger shop near the seafront during the lockdown, went purely online for a while, but are now back at the top of town on Holloway Street. Online is great, but for products like ours, nothing replaces being able to pick up and smell a candle in person, or see the sparkle from a piece of jewellery. You just can’t get that online.

“I heard about the Minehead Gift Card earlier in the year and it’s a great idea. Giving someone money is awkward and the gift card is a more thoughtful present. With a Minehead Gift Card in their hand they can treat themselves to something really nice and it’s beneficial for the town too. You give someone £10 cash and it gets spent who knows where but a £10 Minehead Gift Card has to be spent here. Then local independent businesses reinvest that £10 with local suppliers and so it continues. There’s a huge multiplier effect.

“For any businesses not yet part of the Minehead Gift Card I’d say be a part of it. The more businesses that accept the Minehead Gift Card, the more attractive the gift card becomes and the more money is spent in the town.”

The Minehead Gift Card launched in April 2021 as a joint project between Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT), Minehead Business Improvement District (BID), Minehead Town Council and Somerset West, and Taunton and Somerset County Council. Businesses from right across Minehead are able to be part of the scheme for free.

Artist Leo Davey is also part of the Minehead Gift Card and says the gift card gives people access to the best of Minehead:

“The Exmoor and West Country landscape is what inspires much of my work. Living in such a beautiful area gives me a never ending source of subjects. During lockdown I produced a jigsaw puzzle of one of my paintings called "Way Up High - Birds of the World", 89 birds positioned in the shape and colour formation of a rainbow. These puzzles have been really popular. I’ve also created a Christmas card design for 2021 called Lego Christmas Wreath and have just introduced a hardback book of my watercolours and oils created from 2010 - 2020 as well as a variety of prints, cards and original paintings all available from my studio/gallery and from my website.

“West Somerset is a special place and it’s great that people can give a little slice of Minehead with the Minehead Gift Card. It gives them access to small, independent businesses selling unique items that they might not have known about otherwise. Before you go online and do all of your shopping with the mass retailers, I encourage people to look locally and see what’s on offer on your own doorstep, you might be surprised.”

Andrew Hopkins, Minehead BID manager said the gift card will play a big part in Christmas in Minehead:

“You can now pick up a Minehead Gift Card from 8 locations around Minehead (visit and load the card with any value up to £150 yourself. Perfect for a last-minute gift. With free parking on the three Saturday’s before Christmas and events and music in the town including the one organised by Gateway Events in the Old Hospital on the 11th December, the Christmas market and brass band performances, it’s feeling very festive in Minehead this year giving visitors a really special experience when they visit the town.”

The new Minehead Gift Card is part of the award winning Town & City Gift Cards programme from fintech Miconex, with over 70 schemes across the UK and Ireland, including Bath, Exeter and Tavistock.

Businesses from across Minehead can still register to be a part of the scheme using the following link: or by contacting Sally Turner by email at
